Good morning
I own a four year old Bush DAB radio and it has been faultless until now. This morning I noticed the LCD display had vanished, which makes tuning very difficult( I switch between Radio 2, Smooth, Heart, Magic and LBC). When I switched the radio off and back on ten minutes later, the display had come back., Could this be a transmitter issue, as sometimes my local transmitter goes down, or a problem with the radio?

- #2Is that no display at all, ie the LCD not lit up?
In any case it's almost certainly a hardware problem. Not sure about your radio but In some units the LCD display is connected to the main board by a ribbon cable and these can easily come loose. - #3

In any case it's almost certainly a hardware problem. Not sure about your radio but In some units the LCD display is connected to the main board by a ribbon cable and these can easily come loose. - #4It won't be a transmitter issue. Your radio's screen is just broken.
- #5Can be a software bug. But as you've realised, switching it off and on again has cured it.
- #6The display was lit up, but no station information. It's working again now, and I'd assume it was probably the transmitter.
All that should happen if the radio loses signal for whatever reason is that it continues to display the name of the station you were listening to immediately prior to the loss. I've never seen one that completely blanks the screen.
The other factor against it being a transmitter issue is that the services you listed are broadcast on different muxes and equally could even be different transmitter sites. It would therefore be unlikely that you would lose all of them at the same time.
Far more likely is a fault with your radio. - #7As others have said, now is the time to try and recall what has happened to the radio. Have you dropped it on the floor, knocked it over, shaken it around, taken it away on holiday or out for the day involving the suitcase or bag being shaken around ?
Try gently tapping it, or gently banging it on the table, to see if you can get the screen to blank.
If it has in the past been subject to violence, or if subjecting it to mild violence now causes the screen to blank, then there is a chance that as others have said you can tighten things up by delving inside. If you have any doubts about this, then seek advice first, or enlist technical help. If you do do this, and find a loose plug, then a spot of superglue to glue the plug to the main board could permanently cure it, but in a place where it can be cut through again if the plug ever has to be released.
If you are absolutely positive that it has led a 100% innocent life, and if it is at least some of the time powered by batteries, then it could be after four years that the batteries are no longer holding their charge. If you do go down the route of trying replacement rechargeable batteries, make sure that the new ones have the same or higher 'current rating' specified as the 'mAh'. With DAB radios typically using AA batteries, this is quite high for that style of cell, 2300 or 2500 mAh being typical. The radio's manual should tell you what rating that the cells are.
Also what people quite often fail to realise is that on many models if the radio designed to recharge its own cells is powered from the mains and 'radio switched on', the mains is running the radio not recharging the batteries. Only when the radio is plugged into the mains and 'radio switched off' are the batteries being recharged. Double-check the manual to confirm this if necessary.
A final 'effect' is that if the radio has been powered by the mains, and the mains fails or is switched off at the wall socket, then the batteries take over but the display will flicker and blank for a while before it goes completely dark.
Ten minutes might be significant in that if turned off for that time but still plugged in, that could be enough to allow batteries to work again from the charge that they receive. Or maybe when you turned it on, it was working from the mains again anyway so had the screen operating fully ?
I've said all of this simply as suggestions as to secondary alternatives to the main one that people have suggested, of something loose inside. Trying to give you more to think about !
Good luck ! - #8Thankyou, everyone, the radio is working perfectly again, could have been a little glitch with it. Also it's mains only, so there's no risk of batteries losing their charge. It would be a shame to get rid of the radio if it packs up as it's the Bush one with the wooden sides and the silver controi panel.
